Loss Transforms

Updated: Mar 20

On a walk in the park the other day, I noticed a duck floating on its back in the water, lifeless. I stopped in wonder. What had happened? Had it been attacked by a dog? Had it been sick? Had it fought before surrendering to the water?  As I stood there, another duck emerged from the reeds. Was this its partner? Had they been looking forward to spring together, building a nest, raising their young, until life took a different turn?

We humans often think we are the only ones with stories, with drama. But as I stood still, I saw it everywhere. The marked tree, soon to be cut down. The bird that had fallen from its nest. The spider, patiently weaving her web time and time again, and the inevitable fate of the fly caught within it. Nature is filled with life and growth, hope and disappointment, but also pain and loss. Nature shows us how natural the cycle of life, aging, and death truly is. In nature, there seems to be no resistance, only a quiet surrender to what comes and what goes. Acceptance. Letting go. And above all, trust.

Nothing goes to waste. However small, everything that falls returns as nourishment for something new, perhaps something still invisible, waiting to grow. Nature does not fight against loss; it transforms it. Maybe that is the lesson.

Loss is never just an ending. It is the beginning of something we cannot yet see. Even pain has its place in the cycle of life. It can fertilise the seed of empathy and compassion, and become a source of strength and inspiration in our life.

Knowing that I am not alone in my pain opens my heart to everything that lives. And it gives me trust that, like nature, I will always find my way.
