About the event
Mindfulness & Painting on Water
Water, breath, and colour come together in this unique workshop, where mindfulness meets the ancient art of water marbling (Ebru). Together with Turkish artist Nezahat (16 years of experience, an impressive portfolio), I guide you through a creative and meditative process in which intuition, presence, and letting go are central.
The Magic of Water Marbling
Ebru, or Turkish water marbling, originated in 15th-century Persia and was refined in the Ottoman Empire, where it became an important element of bookbinding, calligraphy, and art. Using natural pigments and a specially thickened water surface, organic, flowing patterns emerge. Each artwork is unique and cannot be repeated.
Ebru was valued not only for its beauty but also as a meditative art form, in which water reflects the constant movement of life. It invites surrender, intuition, and the release of control.
An older, related tradition is Suminagashi, the Japanese art of “floating ink,” dating back to the 12th century. Monks allowed black ink to flow over water, creating subtle, circular patterns. While Ebru is colourful and layered and Suminagashi is minimalist and still, both art forms share a deep respect for impermanence, flow, and the art of the moment.
Today, Ebru is recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and continues to inspire artists and enthusiasts worldwide.
Deep Relaxation and Creativity
This workshop is not an ordinary painting class. It is an experience in which attention, breath, and creation merge. We begin with an extended mindfulness meditation and exercises to arrive at deep relaxation of body and mind. From this inner stillness, you let the colours dance on the water, without concern for a perfect result. It becomes a play of letting go and surprise.
Each piece reflects your unique moment, a visual meditation that you take home as a tangible memory. Water marbling teaches us to trust the process, to play with the unknown, and to enjoy what emerges. Just like life itself. No prior experience is needed; a curious attitude is enough.
